I’m going to tell a story in which many of you will already know the ending. You go on vacation with your souvenir list, you make time to pick out the perfect trinkets, and you deliver them when you get home only to never see them again. You make think it was a waste, a waste of time and money. In many cases it was. Be not deterred, here are a few quick tips to shop for souvenirs smartly.
1, Trim Down Your List
I no longer add friends to the list unless they ask for something specific. I also do not expect gifts back from their trips. Our group is just too big and they’re married with kids so, their priorities are on getting items for their kiddos. Now If I see an item that I think would be useful, like Mexican vanilla for my friend the bakery owner, I almost bought it except she already beat me to the punch. I now mainly purchase for my sister and my nieces and my mom when she was living. My dad is a traditional man and usually tells me to save my money when it comes to gifts (except for Father’s Day, Christmas, and his birthday :)).
2. Don’t Forget Yourself
Don’t get so caught up in gift-giving that you forget to bring home something for yourself. With that being said, make sure to buy what you know won’t collect dust once you return home. With that being said…
3. Buy Purposeful Gifts
T-shirts, keychains, and magnets are easy. If those are your style go for it, but as I have grown, they have become not worth the time and money. Focus on your lifestyle and how the souvenirs will make sense in your home. For example, I am always chilly, I love warm drinks, and I also love jewelry. and handbags. Therefore on my recent trip to Mexico, I purchased an authentic Mexican blanket, sterling silver and opal rings, a handmade purse and wallet, and a handpainted mug. All have been used and worn since returning because they fit who I am.
