While scrolling on Threads, Kerry Murphy of Main Street & Back Roads, posted the question below. An overwhelming majority suggested Savannah, Ga which is a solid choice, but allow me to add my hometown, Augusta, Ga. to the chat.

Augusta, Ga and Savannah, Ga are what many refer to as “sister cities,” having similar population sizes, historical backgrounds and demographic makeups. Unlike, Savannah, Augusta doesn’t enjoy the benefits of a robust tourism economy (city leaders are working on it!). With that being said, much of what we have to offer gets overlooked outside of the famous golf tournament that happens every April. If you had to treat a foodie friend to a place to eat in Augusta, Ga, here are a few places I’d suggest.
Disclaimer: These are only a few suggestions, and do not encompass the eclectic culinary cuisines Augusta, Ga has to offer. Restaurants are listed in no particular order.
1. Cafe 209-Casual, Soul Food
What is dining in the South without soul food? Cafe 209 is a family-owned casual establishment offering the Southern classics.
2. Cucina 593- Dressy Casual, Italian
My friends may come for me for not gatekeeping, because this is our spot. Cucina 503 is one of the best Italian restaurants in the city. It’s not the largest, but the menu and ambiance more than make up for it. Get the mussels!
3. Frog Hollow- Fine Dining, New American Fare
Plan ahead and make reservations for your party if you plan to treat your friend to dinner here. Slots fill up fast.
4. 8595 Restaurant & Bar inside The Partridge Inn- Casual, Brunch
Once the oldest independently owned hotel in town, The Partridge Inn, is now part of the Curio Collection by Hilton. While I haven’t experienced it, friends have given their brunch good reviews. Brunch is served on Sundays from 11 am – 2 pm. Ask for a table on the deck that overlooks downtown.
5. Humanitree House- Casual, Plant-Based
This is a family-owned and operated establishment offering smoothies, juices, and plant-based fare. Come for the food, stay for the art and music. You may even catch, Brother B, the co-owner live-in-action hand painting another work of art on the walls of the restaurant or on canvas. If you’re in town on a Saturday during the summer, after grabbing something to eat, walk down to the Saturday Market and peruse the offerings of local vendors, and rest along the river at the river walk. Their watermelon juice (limited edition summer juice) and their UnPhly sandwich are my favorites.
6. Abel Brown Southern Kitchen and Oyster Bar- Fine Dining, Steak and Seafood
I hosted a birthday dinner hear a few years back. This is another hot spot in town as reservations fill up fast. You will not regret it!
7. Whiskey Bar Kitchen- Casual, Burgers and Drinks
Pop in for sizable juicy burgers and drinks. Walk off your food as Whiskey Bar is situated in the heart of downtown Augusta. If it’s the weekend, enjoy live music from local music playing along the sidewalks and take in art being sold by local artists! Snag a souvenir for your trip!
